Introduction
If you’re planning to do your Master’s in Germany, you may have recently heard about something called the dMAT Exam. And if you’re wondering, “Do I actually need to take dmat exam?” — you’re not alone. This is a new requirement, so there is already quite a bit of confusion around it.
The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is being introduced in 2026 as an additional part of the APS documentation process for selected Master’s applicants from India. At the moment, it applies to applicants whose previous degree falls within fields such as Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, and Business or Management, for Master’s applications relating to the Summer Semester 2027 intake and later.
So, no — not every Indian student applying for a Master’s in Germany needs to take the dMAT. Whether it applies to you depends mainly on your previous degree and the intake you’re applying for.
In this guide, we’ll break down exactly:
- who needs dMAT Exam?
- How it fits with APS?
- what you should do next?
What is the dMAT Exam?
The dMAT, short for Digital Master Test, is a standardised academic aptitude test for selected students planning to pursue a Master’s degree in Germany. It is being introduced in 2026 as an additional part of the APS documentation process for eligible applicants from India.
The test is administered by g.a.s.t., while APS India continues to handle the verification of your academic documents. In other words, dMAT and APS are connected, but they are not the same thing. The dMAT certificate becomes part of the APS documentation when the requirement applies to you.
The purpose of the dMAT is to assess academic aptitude rather than simply checking what you have memorised. The test includes a general academic component, with dMAT also offering subject-specific modules for certain programmes.
So, if you’re applying for a Master’s in Germany, don’t think of dMAT as another university entrance exam. For affected Indian applicants, it is an additional requirement connected to the APS process.
Who Needs to Take the dMAT for Germany?
Here’s where things get important: not every Indian student applying for a Master’s in Germany needs to take the dMAT.
In its current introductory phase, the requirement applies to applicants whose previous degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management. If you’re planning to start your Master’s in Germany from the Summer Semester 2027 onwards, the dMAT is required as part of the APS documentation process for these affected fields.
Students from other academic backgrounds are not covered by the current dMAT requirement. Bachelor’s applicants and PhD applicants are also outside the current scope.
So, don’t decide based on your Master’s course alone. Your previous degree, intake and APS application timeline all matter. If your degree falls somewhere between two fields, check APS India’s official affected-fields list before registering for the test.
Who Does Not Need the dMAT?
The dMAT requirement does not apply to every student planning a Master’s in Germany.
Under the current APS India rules, applicants whose previous degree is outside the three affected groups — Engineering; Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics; and Business/Management — are not currently covered by the dMAT requirement. Bachelor’s and PhD applicants are also outside the current scope.
There are also some important exemptions. Students who completed their APS online registration before 29 June 2026, or who had already shipped their complete APS documents before that date, are exempt for that APS procedure. Students who have already completed the APS process and received their certificate don’t need to take dMAT for that completed procedure either.
Officially confirmed exchange, double-degree and university partnership applicants are also exempt.
Because these rules are new, don’t rely on an old checklist or advice from a student group. Check the latest APS India guidance before registering for dMAT.
Is dMAT Mandatory for a Master’s in Germany?
Not for every Master’s applicant. The current dMAT requirement applies to selected Indian applicants whose previous degree falls under Engineering; Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics; or Business/Management. For these applicants, the dMAT is required as part of the APS documentation for applications relating to the Summer Semester 2027 and later intakes, unless a transitional exemption applies.
So, simply planning to study for a Master’s in Germany does not automatically mean you need dMAT. Your previous degree and the intake you’re targeting matter.
There’s another point worth remembering: dMAT does not replace APS verification. It is an additional element of the APS documentation, while APS India continues to verify your academic documents.
If you’re unsure whether your academic background falls within the affected fields, check the latest APS guidance before registering for the test.
Is dMAT the Same as the APS Certificate?
No. dMAT and the APS Certificate are two different things, although they are now connected for certain Indian Master’s applicants.
The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is an academic aptitude test administered by g.a.s.t. It gives you a separate dMAT certificate with your test result. For applicants who fall under the current dMAT requirement, that certificate becomes part of their APS documentation.
The APS Certificate, on the other hand, comes from APS India after the organisation verifies the authenticity and formal plausibility of your academic documents.
So, does dMAT replace APS? No. APS India will continue its existing document-verification process. The dMAT is simply an additional requirement for affected applicants; it does not replace your degree certificates, transcripts, APS verification, or the university’s admission decision.
What Does the dMAT Exam Test?
The dMAT isn’t simply a test of how much you remember from your Bachelor’s degree. The idea is to see how well you can think through academic problems.
The test has two parts: a core module and a subject module. The core module looks at general cognitive and analytical skills through three subtests. For Indian students taking dMAT as part of the APS process, the relevant subject module is currently the General Academic Module. It looks at how you apply your reasoning and analytical skills to academic problems rather than testing memorised facts.s
Separate subject modules are also available for areas such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Data Science, depending on the participating university and programme.
The full examination takes around three and a half hours, with a break between the modules.
How to Register for the dMAT
If dMAT applies to your profile, the registration itself is fairly straightforward. Start by checking the official dMAT website and confirming that you fall under the current eligibility requirements. You can then create your registration, enter your details, choose the available test option, and complete the payment.
Once your registration is complete, make sure you keep your confirmation details safely. The dMAT is administered by g.a.s.t., and the test is conducted at designated test centres in India.
For students going through the APS process, remember that dMAT and APS registration are not the same thing. If you’re required to take dMAT, you’ll receive a separate dMAT certificate, which becomes part of your APS documentation.
We’ve also created a detailed video showing the process on screen, so if you’re registering for the first time, watching that walkthrough alongside this guide can make things much easier.
How Much Does the dMAT Cost?
For students who need to take the dMAT, the current test fee is €150. The payment is made during registration, and the dMAT fee is handled by g.a.s.t., which administers the test.
It’s important not to mix this up with the APS fee. The APS procedure fee is ₹18,000, so if the dMAT requirement applies to you, these are separate payments.
One small but important point: fees and procedures can change, especially since dMAT is a newly introduced requirement. Before making any payment, check the latest information on the official dMAT and APS India websites rather than relying on an old blog post or a screenshot shared in a student group.
How Should You Prepare for the dMAT?
Don’t wait until the last week to start preparing for the dMAT. The test is unfamiliar to most students, so getting comfortable with the format is probably the best place to begin.
The official dMAT website provides sample tasks, solutions, preparation materials and videos that show how different question types work on screen. Use these first rather than jumping straight into random material online.
After that, practise regularly. Focus on the kind of reasoning and problem-solving the test expects, and keep an eye on the clock while practising. The aim isn’t to memorise answers; the dMAT is designed to test cognitive skills and the ability to apply knowledge to academic problems.
Most importantly, don’t leave preparation until the final few days. A little practice spread over several weeks is far more useful than trying to learn everything at once.
Common Questions About dMAT
Is dMAT compulsory for every Master’s applicant?
No. At present, it applies to selected Indian applicants whose previous degree falls within the fields specified by APS India, for Master’s applications relating to Summer Semester 2027 and later.
Does dMAT replace the APS Certificate?
No. dMAT is an additional part of the APS documentation. APS India still carries out the academic document verification.
Is dMAT required for Bachelor’s students?
No. The current dMAT requirement is for selected Master’s applicants, not students applying for Bachelor’s programmes.
When is the first dMAT exam?
The first test in India is scheduled for 26 September 2026, with registration opening on 29 June 2026.
Who conducts the dMAT?
The test is administered by g.a.s.t., while APS India remains responsible for document verification.
Does a low dMAT score automatically mean APS rejection?
No. APS India specifically states that a low dMAT score does not automatically result in refusal of the APS Certificate.
What Should You Do If You Are Planning a Master’s in Germany?
If Germany is your plan, don’t start with dMAT or APS in isolation. Start with your own academic profile.
First, look at your previous Bachelor’s degree and the Master’s programme you want to pursue. Then check the intake you’re targeting and whether your previous degree falls within the fields currently covered by the dMAT requirement. For affected applicants targeting the Summer Semester 2027 or later, dMAT forms part of the APS documentation.
The tricky part is making sure you get the order right and don’t miss a requirement along the way.
At PIC Education Europe, we help students review their profile, understand Germany’s changing admission requirements, shortlist suitable options and plan the application process from the beginning rather than fixing problems at the last minute.
Final Thoughts
The dMAT may sound complicated simply because it’s new. Once you know whether it applies to your previous degree, your intended Master’s programme and your intake, the picture becomes much clearer.
If you’re one of the applicants covered by the current requirement, plan for the dMAT alongside your APS process rather than treating it as a last-minute task. And if it doesn’t apply to your profile, there’s no reason to take the test just because you’ve heard other students talking about it. (aps-india.de)
Germany’s admission process has quite a few moving parts, and getting the sequence right can save you a lot of unnecessary stress.
If you’re unsure where your profile fits, PIC Education can help you understand the requirements and plan your Germany Master’s application step by step.
